Not long ago almost every new vehicle retailer either had on staff or regularly contracted freelance individuals to pinstripe their offerings (either for stock units or custom jobs for sold vehicles). It was seen as an easy, inexpensive way to make autos stand out in a crowd. Early pinstripes were painted on by specialists who could be considered artists for their talent and flair. Now stripes are most commonly applied as a self adhesive coloured vinyl in a wide array of shades and widths, right up to panel sized wraps.
