2019 Kia Pro Cee’d on test

2019 Kia Pro Ceed

Shortly after the start of 2018, Kia introduced the third generation Cee’d. But soon after the Geneva Motor Show, the Pro Cee’d was launched along with a station wagon variant. Well, this Pro Cee’d is as old as the second Cee’d generation. Initially, this was a 3-door hatchback and a shooting brake variant, a kind of station wagon.

It’s common among automakers to release the same model with a slightly different-titled performance package. And almost every other guy on the market uses this trick. Well, the simple phenomena is to gain attraction and more customers, which again is one of the best practices.

In a way, the Pro Cee’d used to be a performance variant for the actual Cee’d series. In addition to the 3-door hatchback, even a 5-door model was introduced. But that could only last 5 years. The current third generation model remains only as a 5-door station wagon or as a shooting brake variant. While the three- and five-door superminis are gone. And the credit goes to their lack of fame.

Well, the current model series includes three variants. The GT-Line opens the series and starts at $31,230. A slightly refined GT-Line S sits in the middle with a price tag of $37,580. While the GT is considered the sportiest variant of them all, it’s slightly cheaper than the GT-Line S, which retails for $36,860. A pricey option for sure, but it contains premium ingredients. But most of its competitors even offer premium stuff at a slightly lower price.

Bonnet of 2019 Kia Pro Cee’d

The Pro Cee had a different powertrain than the Cee’d main series. Performance is the key ingredient while economy has not been neglected. Instead, the Pro Cee’d is a powerful, economical family car.

Well, the Pro Cee’d is available in a combination of petrol and diesel powertrains. All petrol engines are turbocharged and produce a power rating equivalent to entry-level sports cars. While the Diesel Pro Cee would be a good choice if you’re just looking for economy and performance, it’s no big deal to you.

The base variant includes a 1.4 L 4-cylinder turbocharged engine with 138 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque. And it comes with the 6-speed manual transmission. While a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission remains optional.

The Performance Edition is available with a 1.6-liter, turbocharged 4-pack engine that runs at 201 horses and 195 lb-ft of torque. And it’s only available with the 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Well, this variant is in a way the continuation of the GT model that featured in the previous generation. Although they were much smarter. But this edition is even spectacular. You can expect a 0 to 100 km/h launch in 9.6 seconds and a top speed of 122 km/h could be reached.

Well, in the end we have the diesel variant, which packs a naturally aspirated 1.6-litre 4-cylinder engine. Also, it gets 134 hp of power with 207 lb-ft of torque. Although it’s less than all petrol variants, it can offer decent performance.

Hyundai Veloster

The Hyundai Veloster is an equal competitor for the Kia Pro Cee’d. In a way, they are cousins and share some nominal differences like styling, powertrain type, and interior trim. While the rest is almost the same.

Consider Pro Cee’d versus Cee’d to do things differently, especially when you need something that could easily suffice with the economy, performance and comfort. But a hefty price could cause trouble.
