We used the Innova 7111 Smart Diagnostic OBD2 Tablet to help us diagnose and resolve issues across multiple vehicles. With a large, easy-to-use LCD screen and broad vehicle compatibility, this tool does a little more than your entry-level device OBD2 scanner could achieve this.
- Easy to use with intuitive LCD interface
- Wide vehicle coverage
- Can do a lot more than just read engine codes
Innova7111 OBD2 tablet overview
The price of the Innova 7111 Smart Diagnostic OBD2 Tablet clearly sets this device up as a device aimed at more experienced users. Do-it-yourselfers and consumers have several more affordable options if you just want to diagnose the engine lights and reset your oil change and filter reminders. This particular Innova OBD2 code reader includes several additional features and functions that allow advanced users to perform more advanced maintenance tasks and diagnostics on a wide range of vehicles.
While the Innova 7111 is not a factory or dealer level diagnostic tool, it does give you a ton of useful features. You can perform service resets for oil, engine, filters and other systems. In addition to reading codes, you can also perform a custom scan and get real-time data from your vehicle.
Most beginners OBD2 scanners allow you to translate a check engine light or other indicator light into English so you can do something about it. The Innova 7111 OBD2 Tablet goes a few steps further. The basic functions of this intelligent diagnostic tablet include:
- scan vehicle
- Performing a network scan
- Scan and test selected modules
- Reading of live vehicle data
- Clear diagnostic trouble codes
Additional tests with the Innova OBD2 tablet
However, the Innova 7111 Diagnostic OBD2 Tablet also offers you some additional tests. Among these you can:
- View In-Use Performance Tracking (IPT).
- Perform service resets
- View drive cycle procedures
And for the car nerds out there (you know who you are), you can also see real-time data on the various sensors and input/output data as your vehicle drives. Once you’ve made the appropriate repairs or attended to marked maintenance points, the Innova 7111 allows you to turn off or reset the lights to complete the job.
Using the Innova 7111 Smart Diagnostic OBD2 tablet
I’m not sure if Innova could have created a simpler interface to connect the 7111 Connect OBD2 tablet to your vehicle and start a diagnostic scan.
You start with the ignition off and plug the 7111 cable into your vehicle’s 16-pin data connector. Then turn on the tablet. To initiate a diagnostic test, turn on the ignition (but don’t start the engine) and tap the global OBD button in the upper left quadrant of the screen. This will show a progress bar “Scanning OBD” as Innova 7111 OBD2 tablet scans the vehicle. This may take a few minutes to complete – especially on newer vehicles with many more sensors.
Next, you will be asked to enter the vehicle’s mileage, after which the results of the scan will be displayed. When you return later, access this data from the Global OBD Results screen. It includes global onboard diagnostics (OBD), planned maintenance, predicted failures, technical service bulletins (TSBs) and even recalls.
Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes
The Innova 7111 The OBD2 tablet also makes it easy to clear diagnostic trouble codes. After you have scanned the vehicle, you can select “Clear DTC” in the main menu.
Just tap the checkboxes next to each trouble code you want to clear. Once selected, press the Clear DTCs button. It will give you a confirmation popup confirming that you want to clear the DTCs.
Performing service resets
On some newer vehicles, you can easily reset general maintenance reminders and codes through the in-dash computer. Others force you to fiddle with the ignition and perform a series of bizarre tasks to clear an ad. For more advanced service resets — like how to deal with electric parking brakes or bleed the ABS — many people give up and visit the dealership.
We love that you can easily perform service resets with the Innova 7111 tablet. Access the Service Reset screen from the bottom right of the main screen. It gives you options to perform the following service reset procedures:
- Reset the oil lamp
- battery reset
- Electric parking brakes
- Reset steering angle
- ABS bleeding
- Battery/Alternator Test
If a specific service reset function is not available for your make and model, the tablet will inform you with a message. You will also receive a confirmation before the The OBD2 system performs the reset.
Replacing the brakes on a 2011 VW CC
We used the Innova 7111 when replacing the brakes on a 2011 VW CC that uses rear electronic parking brakes. An electric servo motor applies force to the hydraulic brake pistons in the rear calipers to apply the brake. Usually any type of rear brake work requires a visit to the dealer or a workshop as the right equipment is required. This is where the Innova 7111 came into play. I was able to run the brake service sequence in the 7111’s software, which released the rear calipers. Next I replaced the pads and used the software to reset the parking brake servo.
Everything was done without a single problem – just as if I was using the factory computer system.
Real-time live data mode with the Innova OBD2 tablet
The Innova The OBD2 tablet allows you to view and optionally record live data in real time. In live data mode, you can see battery power, RPM, temperature, speed and more. You can also access output from vehicle sensors, switches and actuators, including fuel system status and more.
Basically the Innova 7111 The OBD2 tablet can provide information for any PID (Parameter Identification Data) sensor, sensor, actuator, switch or status supported by the vehicle.
You can record this live data in the tablet’s memory. Simply select the live data mode and tap the “Record” button at the top right to start recording live data. Tap the Stop button at the top left to stop recording at any time. The tablet will ask you whether you want to save or delete the data.
By using the Innova 7111 Smart Diagnostic, we easily saved ourselves several hundred dollars in diagnostic and service fees OBD2 tablet. When using this tool on multiple vehicles, we found that it offers a little more capability than even the well-respected Innova CarScan Pro 5610. You can certainly accomplish a lot with less, but if you consider yourself a true automotive enthusiast or even an entry-level pro the Innova 7111 offers a high-end solution for OBD2 scanning that includes more features than entry-level diagnostic tools.
While Innova Basic has OBD2 scanner starting at around $60, the Innova 7111 Smart Diagnostic The OBD2 tablet is on our recommended list for just $599.99.
